Members of the expedition led by geologist Nikolai Urvantsev built the house in August 1921. At the zero picket, where the house was built, geologists spent the first winter.
The house of three rooms and a kitchen became a haven for subsequent expeditions to the Norilsk region. From the mid-1930s until the mid-1970s, the house was an ordinary residential building. In 1978, Norilsk geologists restored it, and the museum created an exposition in it, taking as a basis the life of the expeditions of the 1920s.
The Norilsk Museum is one of the visiting cards of the city. It was founded at the geological department of Norilskstroy just four years later, when the mining and smelting plant began to be built. The first exposition was opened in a barrack on Zavodskaya Street.
Today the museum is housed in a three-story building of the former wide-screen cinema named after Lenin on Komsomolskaya Square in the very center of the historical part of Norilsk and has unique collections of exhibits that tell about the history of the development and development of the city.

The memorial complex began to be created in 1990 at the initiative of the museum of the history of the Norilsk industrial region and the city society “Memorial” by the efforts of enthusiasts of Norilsk, the Baltic countries, Poland, with the support of the city administration and MMC “Norilsk Nickel”.
It is located on the site of mass graves of victims of the Norillag under Mount Schmidt.
